About North Pole, AK

North Pole, Alaska is located in Fairbanks North Star Borough. The population of North Pole, according to the census that was conducted during the year of 2011, was 2,132 people. This represents a 35.80% increase in the population of North Pole since the year 2000.

During the 1940's and the 1950's, between the 26 Mile Field and Ladd Field there were several divided and undivided homesteads south of Fairbanks on the Richardson Highway.

In 1944, Mr. and Mrs. Davis homesteaded the region that is currently known as the community of North Pole. As part of a railroad spur line to Eielson Air Force Base, the Alaska Railroad established a siding on the Davis homestead and named that siding Davis. Davis was the first but temporary name of the small community.

The Davis homestead was bought by the Gaske and Dahl Development Co. in 1952. The homestead was renamed North Pole and subdivided. It was the hope of the development company to attract a toy manufacturer to the community. In 1953, North Pole was incorporated. The parts that were incorporated included parts of the Davis homestead as well as the neighboring homestead owned by a man named James Ford. A man named Everett Dahl served on the first city council and the first mayor was Mr. Ford.

In 1949 a man named Conrad Miller arrived in Fairbanks and in 1952 opened a trading post next to the highway. Mr. Miller was also a member of that first council. Mr. Miller's trading post became known as the house of Santa Claus House. This structure has become a roadside attraction over the years. For nearly 20 years, this structure served and the post office for North Pole. A man named Lucius Cunningham and his family operated another trading post in the small community. Up until the 1970's when the present day four lane Richardson Highway was constructed, which bypassed the downtown portion of the subdivision of Davis, the community was primarily centered on these two businesses. .

In 1977, operations were started by the Earth Resources refinery. This refinery connected many of the feeder pipelines primarily next to the Laurence Road section line and operated by the Golden Valley Electric Association to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. Many years after the pipeline was built, the North Pole Plaza was built, which is a large enclosed shopping center located next to the Richardson Highway. In the 1980's, prior to the real estate marking temporarily collapsing, the increased development of subdivisions and a standalone high school followed.

In the late 1990's and the early 2000's, where the highway intersects with northern end of Santa Clause lane and the eastern end of Badger Road, an interchange was built next to the Richardson Highway. In order to serve the nearby frontage road section as well as the intersection, the northernmost part of Santa Claus Lane was reconfigured so that it would accommodate three roundabouts in a consecutive fashion.
