About Skagway, AKWith a 2010 census-reported population of 920 and a total land area of 452 square miles, Skagway has a population density of 2 people per square mile – one of the lowest population densities in America. The city’s name means “a windy place with white caps on the water” in Tlingit, a native people inhabited the area since prehistoric times. The Tlingit had become a prosperous tribe by hunting and fishing and trading with other tribes in the region. In 1887, however, William Moore and his son homesteaded the area because they believed it was the most direct route to goldfields and hoped that the sawmill they built would prosper from miners passing through. Unfortunately, the plan backfired when the first boatload of prospectors docked in his wharf and one of them claimed the land as their own and sold it to others.
By June 1898, Skagway had achieved a population of more than 10,000 people, mainly miners. A year later, the city’s economy collapsed and dejected miners left the area. Today, locals in Skagway operate a number of museums in honor of the city’s history, including the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park.
The racial makeup in Skagway is as follows: 92.34% White, .58% Asian, 3% Native American, .23% Pacific Islander, and 2% Hispanic of any race. The city has a per capita income of $27,700 and an average household income of $49,375 annually. 3.7% of the population lives at or below the poverty line, mostly those over the age of 65.
The city is largely supported by tourism and is a popular stop for cruise ships. Skagway was also the setting of several chapters in “Call of the Wild”, a best-seller written by Jack London. At one point, the city had a population of nearly 30,000.
