About Homer, AK

With an estimated 2010 population of just over 5,000 people, Homer, Alaska has grown by an amazing 26.8% since 2000. The average age of residents in the city is 44 years. The average age of residents throughout the entire state of Alaska, by comparison, is just 36.1 years. The population wasn't the only area of growth in Homer since 2000 - the median household income increased from $42,821 in 2000 to nearly $57,000 in 2009. Homer is the “halibut fishing capital of the world” and, not surprisingly, much of the city's local economy relies on halibut and salmon sport fishing and other types of tourism, along with commercial fishing and logging operations.

The town was actually created by the Cook Inlet Coal Fields Company in the 1890s after coal was discovered in the area. The company built the town, a dock, the coal mine, and a railroad. Mining continued to be a major industry in Homer until World War II. Like many “coal towns” throughout the US, the mine didn't close down due to a lack of coal. There is still more than 400 million tons of coal in deposits throughout the area. Despite the long history of coal mining in the area, the city was named after Homer Pennock, who was a gold mining company promoter. He built the first settlement for his crew of 50 men, though gold mining was never profitable in the city.

Despite its relatively small population, there are two local papers in the city: the Homer Tribune and the Homer News. Both are weekly papers. Homer is also home to a number of radio stations in both the AM and FM band. Because of its remote location, the city receives only 7 analog television channels: KTUU-TV (NBC), KTBY (FOX), KAKM (PBS), KYES (MyNetworkTV), KTVA (CBS), and KYUR (ABC). Interestingly, because the television channels are broadcast using repeaters, residents in the city were not required to participate in the analog-to-digital transition.
